Scales Competition

Scales Competition was our first online event during the lockdown, so I didn’t want it to be something too difficult for the students. We had done a scales competition at Studio Meraki back in 2018, and it was a successful event.

The process went like this:

1) Categorizing students into 5 groups- Initial, 1, 2, 3, and 4.

2) Each group got a set of 10-15 scales to learn. The beginners had to play them hands separately, whereas the seniors played more challenging scales at higher tempos, both hands together. Each student had to prepare a mix of major, minor, chromatic, contrary motion scales.

3) On competition day, we had category-wise Zoom meetings. I called out scales and the students had to play those in turn. 10 scales, 30 points each: fluency,

accuracy, and tone were taken into consideration.

4) Since it was a competition, I sent out the points table and announced the winners. Each student got a Scales Result- which was their score and what they can improve on.

Scales are very important in music, but students find it tedious to go through scales practice. This competition got the students very excited- the feedback from the parents showed it! Later in the day,

I was getting messages from the students asking when the results will be declared.
